Most method execution tasks done by lab analysts are paper-based, from the point when a sample enters the lab until a final test value results. In many cases, analysts have to carry a hard copy of the SOP with them, either in a binder or as a printout from the network or document management system.
 On top of that, there is the time-consuming documentation of everything that involves the execution of that SOP: manual verification of instrument calibration, records of supplies used, recording of test results.
Analysts are also burdened by tedious manual transcriptions of test results into forms, based on all of the manually recorded logbooks and paper notebooks.
